Reconnecting with a Wholarian Vision
On my second day in the hospital, the doctor leaned close to the bed. I knew the way his energy had shifted that he was about to tell me something important. Softly he said, “Katrina, I don’t know if you realize this. The other night when you came into the emergency room… well, you only had minutes to live.”
Really? Minutes?
Whoa… It had been the day before my birthday in October 1996 when I experienced severe abdominal pain. I didn’t realize I needed medical attention at first. But after a few hours of feeling very faint my husband (at the time) drove me through rush-hour traffic to the hospital. On arrival I was unconscious and in shock. It turns out that I had an ectopic pregnancy which ruptured near two major arteries and I hemorrhaged internally for hours. Over half my blood was in my abdomen. Basically, I was bleeding to death quickly.
Thankfully, my extraordinary doctor evaluated the situation, operated immediately and saved my life. But everything changed forever during that process. When I awoke with get-well and birthday balloons floating over my hospital bed, I said, “This isn’t the birthday present I expected.” And my mother answered, “Well, you got the best present of all. You got your life back.”
Mom was right, but what we didn’t realize was that I had gotten a “different” life back, not my old one. You see, three months later, my marriage ended. And some of the people I thought were friends turned out not to be. In addition, my job changed and I had to move to a new home. Needless to say, it was the “end of the world as I knew it.”
But what a blessing! That may sound cliché, but it’s true. When your foundation is shaken to the core, you have to rebuild. And I chose to rebuild a more beautiful life filled with joy, forgiveness, love, peace and incredible connections. Mind you, it wasn’t always easy, so I kept dozens of journals to capture the waves of intense emotion. Then one day I felt compelled to share this message of hope. So, the stories, poems and prayers from those journals became my first book called, The Mustard Seed Way.
After its publication, I earned a Ph.D. in Metaphysics and became an ordained interfaith minister. I wrote many articles, spoke to audiences and even became a First Vice President for a major bank. And, in my “spare time,” I continued to keep journals which planted the seeds for my second book called, Wholarian Vision: How to Remember Your Connection to Everything. Yes, life did shift dramatically in October 1996… but absolutely for the better. It even inspired me to change my eating habits to become a rawfood vegan. Plus, I recently married the man of my dreams. So, experiencing “only a few minutes to live” wasn’t an ending. It was a new and beautiful beginning.
