It was 8am and the alarm went off. I smacked it with my hand that let out a hard thump. Surprised at the sound I looked over to realize that my hands were huge and had claws with a finger now being the size of what used to make up two. I threw my trunk-like legs over the bed and grumbled. Clasping my big paws on my chest, I realized my boobs were monsterous just like the rest of me and they hurt. I felt irritable, sensitive, fat and bloated. Which begs the question, how can we look and feel our best when our monthly visitor comes by for a visit?
And I know you know what I’m talking about. Nothing is more disappointing than putting in a good concerted effort in the lou just to produce a kibble. But there are reasons for all of it: the cravings for junk, cramps and backaches. In fact many painful periods are a result of Liver Qi stagnation according to Chinese Medicine. You see, our liver Qi (a.k.a. our vital energy) needs to flow smoothly but when it doesn’t, it gets stuck. If we’ve been boozing it up, not getting enough shuteye and eating crap, that monster will come out. Here’s a couple ways it’ll manifest:
Swollen Planetary Boobage & Hydrotherapy
I will admit I’ve crossed my arms to inconspicuously hold my chest to prevent the painful jiggle of running down the stairs. According to Chinese Medicine, our boobs will swell because of that stuck energy. So the best thing to do is move that Liver Qi. And one of the ways I love to do this is through hydrotherapy. It’s not exactly pleasant but I guarantee you, you’ll feel a world better. At the end of your shower, turn off the hot water and turn around for about a minute. Then after, turn the water to as hot as you can stand it for two minutes ending with hot. Repeat for a good five minutes. This will circulate and make things move because the hot/cold combination forces your body to pump blood and Qi throughout.
Frustration, anger & irritability
I know many of my patients have mentioned that they are quick to snap during that time of the month just for it to quickly turn into tears. Much of these feelings are a form of suppression that bursts out like verbal diarrhea and liver that needs some serious loving. So from a mental perspective allow me to suggest hugging your soul with activities like yoga, apartment dancing (my personal favourite) and singing your ass off in the shower. From a physical perspective when you crave chocolate go for something good and I’ve got just the thing:
Sexy Strawberry Chocolate Nut Bark
*Recipe from my upcoming Sexy Liver Detox launching in June 2013
½ cup coconut oil
¾ cup raw cacao powder
6 packets stevia
2 handfuls nuts of your choice
Melt coconut oil over medium heat and add raw cacao powder. Turn down heat and quickly whisk adding stevia and sea salt. If the mixture becomes too thick, add in a bit more coconut oil to liquefy. Pour onto a large baking sheet and top with nuts and sliced strawberries. Place pan into the freezer for 5-10mins and crack bark and break off a piece to enjoy.
This is an excellent dessert to help ward off those nasty sugar cravings that will further stagnate your liver Qi. Plus the cacao will give you that dose of magnesium needed during that time to help with muscle relaxation (think what it can do for those one-sided tense liver headaches and cramps!).
In the meantime, stay tuned because my Sexy Liver Detox that sold out last year in less than a week is coming up revamped with new recipes & a new program.
