When Being A Woman Isn't Easy…

It’s 8am, and my hot water bottle has just become my new best friend soothing my cold little belly that is just dying of cramps. Looking down I hardly recognize my body and realize that my boobs have turned into planets nine and ten (sorry Pluto). So I’ve decided to bring my laptop into bed with me and type this entry. But truthfully, the only thing I want to do is eat chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate (yes, even at 8am). I want to dive in Willy Wonka’s pool, eat chocolate flowers and slather it all over my face like Michael Meyers did on the SNL skit with Nicole Kidman. I’m out of control folks. So when being a woman isn’t easy, what can you do to get a little comfort?
Well with me, you know the answer is simple…food.
And trust me, this craving is the only thing that got myself out of bed this morning. Rampaging through my cupboards looking for some sexy food comfort, I found my answer in two main ingredients: matcha green tea and cocoa powder. So here it is, the answer to this morning’s prayers.
1 cup unflavoured almond milk
1/2 tsp matcha powder (I like the one from Clef de Champs)
1 tsp cocoa powder (Dagoba works great)
Honey or stevia to taste
Bring almond milk to a boil and pour a quarter cup of it into a cup. Add matcha powder and with a fork whisk it as fast as possible to break up any chunks.
Transfer into the pot with the almond milk and add cocoa powder. With a whisk, stir up quickly until well blended.
Pour back into cup and add honey or stevia to taste.
I know this sounds like a weird combination, but hear me out. It’s good, no, really good. It satisfied my chocolate craving and gave me a perk that will sustain me longer rather than coffee with it’s quick up then down.
The reason why we crave chocolate during that time is because chocolate is a great source of magnesium which is depleted around that time. Unlike calcium which contracts, magnesium relaxes. So for headaches, muscle pain, menstrual cramps and even constipation, magensium is incredible. Food sources range from dark leafy greens and pumpkin seeds to salmon. Studies show, that over half of us are deficient in magnesium, which would make sense since most people forget to eat their greens.
Matcha is my other God sent. Not only does it give you a little boost, but it’s full of chlorophyll plus an amino acid called L-theanine which increases alpha waves in the brain creating a feeling of relaxation. It’s what I call my magical green chill powder. Granted it’s not cheap. You’re looking at between $20-$30 for a little tin, but when you’re using 1/4-1/2 tsp per serving, it goes a long way.
Now back to me…’cus it’s all about me this morning…
So while feeling the embrace of my bed and clutching onto my hot water bottle, the Intellect kisses my forehead and is off to work. A part of me feels guilty and almost lazy because I’ve called in sick today, but I need to stay in and take care of myself. What good am I to them when I have zero energy? Maybe this is just my body’s way of telling me to stop…for once. So instead, I’ve decided to shake off the guilt. I don’t feel guilty about my food, so why my work? Why are we compelled to work to the bone and forget to take care of ourselves?
Now I know that this entry sounds like a bit of a bitch fest, but don’t get me wrong, despite the downfalls, I love and find a lot of comfort in being a woman. I appreciate the freedom of creative expression I have, walking with purpose, feeling sexy and intelligent to know that I’m an equal.
Granted, being a woman isn’t easy, but hey, good things don’t always come so easy anyway, right?

Melissa, great to see you posting now. I hope the design isn't too straining on the eyes.
I wandered to your blog and thought this could be perfect for my girlfriend.
Thank you! As a woman I thank you! I am not alone in my chocolate cravings which under normal circumstances I can live without! So I thank you for this waist line friendly substitute! I feel so guilty partaking in chocolate covered chocolate moist and deliscious cake, but its usually the only thing that can keep me conscious enough to complete a work day!
